Silke Helmerdig (1964, Düsseldorf, lives
in Berlin) collects personal experiences in her photographic works, taking them out of the continuous flow of time by
conserving them in snapshots. Her series show moments of her daily life that too are parts of history, but mostly
neglected and seen as unimportant.
In the shown diptychs in black and white Helmerdig combines photographs of her face and details of her body. Once the
portrait shows her with very short hair, once with longer hair – and only because of this difference the question about the
sex of the portrayed person occurs to the viewer.
