fe/male
placard intervention
in an underground-station (U4 Braunschweiggasse) in Vienna
1st – 31st of August, 2001

The shown photographs light up the wide spectrum of possible views and stand-points, presenting multiple concepts of a gendered self or creating fantastic visions.

While in the arts questioning the borderline between “male” and “female” is an important theme since the sixties, the need to categorise someone as man or woman is still existing in everyday life. People are irritated by andro- gynous persons who cannot be identifiable as one or the other sex, transgenders are still discriminated and laughed at, drags are only accepted as performance artists .

To open a discussion about the meaning and the power of categories and polarities the project fe/male gets out of specialised art-spaces into the public space. By presenting the photographs as posters in underground- stations this artistic intervention confronts every passer-by with its concern.
